BREAKING NEWS!!!!
This is a special edition of Walker's News!!! Sadly, our beloved chicken Connie (the only white chicken we had) was taken by a fox during the storm the other night. We will all miss her very much.
Yes, it's true! Connie has left a legacy! We found her on Friday and even though she is just a chick she's already fully feathered!! We think she grew her feathers quickly because she was in the wild and needed to keep warm. She can also scratch, eat bugs and FLY! She probably survived in the wild by roosting in the trees. We have no idea how Connie managed to hatch the egg, or hide the chick from us for so long. We are calling her "Little Connie" our chicken miracle.

Walker's News Episode 3
Today's episode of Walker's News was done without the help of his director, Quentin. This may be obvious as Walker tends to get a wee bit distracted and off topic at times...not to mention he goes in and out of a british accent. ENJOY :-)

Egg Production and A Lesson on Chickens by Quentin
The latest egg production has started to speed up. Unfortunately a fox got into our hen house and Nugget is now missing. Then the fox came back and dragged poor Connie to the bottom of the yard, but we were able to run the fox off and Connie seems to be making a full recovery. But on the bright side of chicken farming and egg production, by the end of this month more chickens are coming, meaning more fresh untreated eggs!
Eggs from the store have very light colored yolks because of the treatments they give the chickens. Plus there is a lot of time between the chicken's laying and you buying. This causes the yolk to become pale and the egg is rather flavorless. Chicken Scratch eggs are gathered from the nest, stuck in an egg carton and delivered to you.
For those of you who like good chicken meat, Cornish Roasters are an excellent source of meat! They will eat plenty of feed in a short time and become a very heavy, broad chicken. Any recipe that calls for chicken must have that fresh chicken meat! Also, these chickens do not lay eggs.
That's all for now!

A Little About Our Chickens by Quentin
After the chicks we bought last fall were big enough we moved them to the barn. Egg production is now starting to come. Just recently we received a pale olive green egg and a light brown egg with walnut brown specks up and down it.
Green eggs still have the same fresh flavor, the shell is just a different color. This breed of chicken, the Araucana from Chile, is know for its colorful eggs.
We keep some of our favorite chickens at our house instead of the barn. Recently my bothers and I built our New Hampshire Red, Nugget, a "broody-box". We are trying to get her to hatch eggs so then we will have chicks! But don't worry no baby chicks will pop out of the eggs you buy, we promise!
In May we are expecting 15 Red Star pullets to add to our Chicken Scratch flock. They will lay large brown eggs.
Speaking of eggs, you can save money by buying eggs from us! Sometimes a dozen eggs in the store can be $3.09 or more. Our eggs are only $3.00. The average fresh egg seller charges $4.00.
Also, for better egg production, we let our chickens free-range. From the things they find and eat plus the feed we buy for them, they get enough vitamins and calcium to lay good eggs.

Young Roosters FREE To a Good Home! by Quentin
They are about 6 months old. Beautiful Araucana roosters of magnificent color are being given away to whomever would like one. Their names are Lloyd, George, Clarence and Elmer. They can already crow (except Clarence, he was attacked by a opossum and we think it set him back a bit).
Lloyd is red with a green tail.
George is white with a green black and brown on his back and a green tail.
Clarence is blue/gray with a yellow and green tail (he is a cuckoo maran not an araucana).
Elmer is red, green and black with a green tail.
If you are interested contact Mom & Dad, because they will be butchered this weekend!!!!! YIKES!

Welcome To Chicken Scratch!!
My name is Emily. I am the mother of these 4 awesome entrepreneurs. I will serve as moderator of this blog, the content (with the exception of this post) will be done completely by the kids. Our main author of written content will be Quentin (11yo). Video content will generally be from Walker (8yo) and Everett (5yo) and Maisie (3yo) will be sprinkled in and around as well.
The kids have been raising chickens and selling eggs for a couple of years and they have decided to expand their business. We help them along, but really they do most of the work and make most of the decisions. We are very proud of them and we hope you enjoy our little experiment.
